Use Hydrogen Peroxide as a Dog Emetic [Pets]

Use Hydrogen Peroxide as a Dog EmeticIf your furry friend ever consumes foods that are toxic for dogs such as chocolate, you can administer hydrogen peroxide to cause the dog to throw up. This can save your dog's life if done quickly after a large portion of canine toxic food is consumed.

Pet care weblog Pet Place suggests the first thing you want to do is call a veterinarian. The vet will go over your dog's size, the amount of the substance consumed, how long ago it was consumed, and the overall level of your pet's health. If instructed to induce vomiting you should use 3% hydrogen peroxide, not the stronger solution meant to color hair in the dosage of 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight. You should then walk the dog or shake it's stomach to mix the peroxide with the stomach contents. The dog should vomit within 15-20 minutes. You can safely repeat this procedure once more if the dog does not throw up the first time.

The source article below also mentions that hydrogen peroxide can be used to induce vomiting for cats as well, but in researching this post I've found conflicting reports so make sure to verify with your veterinarian. If you have a dog you may want to add a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide 3% solution to your medicine cabinet. Photo by Tony Alter
