Butterly seeks GOP primary
Skips caucus because of open voting
WOODBURY ? Board of Finance Chairman William J. Butterly Jr. said he will boycott the town's Republican caucus July 18 and challenge First Selectman Gerald D. Stomski in a primary election for the party's nomination.
Butterly said the party's leadership planned to push for a vote by a show of hands as opposed to a secret ballot to select the nominee, a move he believed left his supporters vulnerable to intimidation.
"I've never had people tell me they're afraid to vote before," Butterly said, noting a change of attitude during Stomski's administration. "There are a lot of insecure people, shall we say, around town right now."
