HTC launches trio of Dragons in China, Ice Cream Sandwich on all

HTC launches trio of Dragons in China, Ice Cream Sandwich on all
HTC's been far from quiet since unveiling its One series to the masses, and today the company's continuing the trend by launching three new devices in China. This trio makes up HTC's Dragon lineup, which our partners at Engadget China first met at MWC. Leading the way is the 4-inch HTC VT T328t for China Mobile, featuring Sense 4, an S-LCD, WVGA screen, a 1GHz CPU alongside 512MB of RAM, the famed Beats Audio and of course, it's running a flavor of Android ICS. As for the VC T328d (Telecom) and V T328w (Unicom), they're both rocking similar specs as the VT model, with the exception of dual-SIM card slots on each. All three Dragons are expected to be available by month's end, but save for the T328w costing 1999 yuan (around $320), pricing remains a mystery.

Soccer player defects from Cuba, requests asylum in US

Soccer player defects: A Cuban national soccer player disappeared while his team was playing in an Olympic soccer tournament in Tennessee.

Yosmel De Armas is a Cuban soccer player who has defected in order to seek asylum in the United States. While in Nashville, Tennessee last month for an Olympic qualifying soccer tournament, the Cuban midfielder was absent from his national team's final game against Canada, although he played on Saturday?s 4-0 loss to El Salvador.?

When asked why the player skipped the game, the Cuban national coach said De Armas was sick and remained at the team's hotel. However, when the team left Nashville, the promising soccer player did not accompany his teammates on their return trip to the island nation.

Although US officials refused to comment about the player?s whereabouts, it was reported that De Armas was last seen in Miami.?

"We're preparing an asylum application to file with the Department of Homeland Security," attorney Alex Solomiany said, according to Reuters.?

The Miami-based lawyer, who?described his client as "nervous," said De Armas is "alone here"?and that he was on his way to Miami at the time of the game, contrary to the coach's allegations.

A rising number of Cuban athlete defections are explained by several factors: the continuous financial hardship the populace faces in Cuba, the plethora of defection precedents that make the process look easy, and the luring prospects of a better life, all coalesce to urge young athletes to follow this path.?

"This is another case of a Cuban sportsman trying to get a decent life, to try to take control of his own career," Omar Lopez told Reuters.? Lopez is general director of the Cuban American National Foundation, a Miami-based organization of Cuban exiles who seek political change on the island.

Four years ago, seven members of the Cuban under-23 national soccer team also sought political asylum after competing against its US counterpart in Tampa, Florida.?

"Of course, my heart will be in Cuba with my family, but I want to have the freedom to better my life, to play professional soccer, to be the best I can be, and for that we had to make this sacrifice," Yenier Bermudez told the Miami Herald, according to ESPN.

Since the 2002 CONCACAF (Confederation of North, Central America, and Caribbean Association Football) tournament in Los Angeles, a total of 15 Cuban soccer players abandoned their teams and requested political asylum in the United States.

BBS version of Google takes you back in time, won't hog your phone line
If the third digit of your birth year is a nine (or heck, a zero), you'll likely never have experienced the true agony joy that was BBS or Bulletin Board Systems. Well, thanks to nostalgic developer Norbert Landsteiner, you can take a glimpse at how your dad got online with an HTML / JavaScript emulation BBS Google. Likewise, more seasoned travelers of the internet can take a trip down memory lane and see what Mountain View's search engine might have looked like "back in the day." All the details are there, right down to the familiar modem tones and ASCII graphics, it's even somewhat functional (when the API isn't over its limit.) So, want to appreciate that browser you complain about on twitter all the time over your LTE connection? Tab on down to the source link for a lesson in gratitude.

Boy-Band Romance Rumors: Joe Jonas Dating A Model?

As Jonas is photographed with Brazilian model Jessica Pott, rumors swirl about One Direction's Harry Styles and the Wanted's Max George.

For boy banders, it seems that spring has sprung and love is in the air. With so many rumors floating around, it seems like now is the time to do a Boy-Band Romance Report Card. So, MTV News has compiled a roundup of who's dating whom, who's nursing a broken heart and who is playing the field. Now, we'll quit playing games with your heart and dive right into all the juicy details:

Whom is Harry Styles Dating, Anyway? These days, One Direction is pretty busy traveling the globe, touring and promoting their album Up All Night, so any rumors of their romantic escapades seem to be as fleeting as their stops in various ports of call.

In addition to chatter that Taylor Swift is crushing on him, American singer Lily Halpern opened up about the rumors she's seeing Harry. She confirmed seeing him when he was in NYC for the band's appearance on "Saturday Night Live," but did she confirm whether they are a couple?

"I met Harry through Big Time Rush. ... We've been friends ever since [we met in March]," she told E! News. "He's adorable. He's a great, great guy. Who doesn't have a crush on Harry Styles? He's great. He's a good friend. He's a very good friend. He's in Australia now. The time difference definitely makes it really hard ... so we haven't been able to talk on the phone or anything, but I've definitely heard from him."

"It's hard. ... I saw him this [past] weekend," the NYC-based singer said of watching "Flubber" with him during some off-time. "I haven't been able to see him that much. It would be very hard to have a relationship with someone [who travels a lot]. If he was here all of the time, things would probably be different, but we're friends for now."

One Direction will be back in the States next month for their U.S. tour.

Joe Jonas Has a New Lady?!? Well, it seems Joe Jonas has a new lass in his life. The Jonas brother was photographed strutting around Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood with Brazilian model Jessica Pott. He has reportedly been seeing the catwalker since December, but the twosome has been pretty stealthy about avoiding being photographed together.

According to the Daily Mail, the two were first spotted together hanging in the Meatpacking District months ago, and her rep would only confirm, "They do know each other."

Jonas has been in and out of New York working his brothers, the currently single "How to Succeed" star Nick and married big bro Kevin, on their next album, a follow-up to 2009's Lines, Vines and Trying Times.

Is Max George Engaged? The Wanted's resident bad boy recently confirmed that he's no longer betrothed to Brit actress Michelle Keegan, emphatically telling Ryan Seacrest, "No, no, no, not anymore" and adding that he is "absolutely" enjoying the benefits of his heartthrob status.

However, her rep tried to clarify their relationship status to the Mirror, noting they are together, despite what Max implied in his interview. "Michelle and Max are still very much together as a couple, but they are both traditionalists and realized that there is no point in being engaged until they are in a position to plan a wedding," the statement reads.

Perhaps they put off a wedding because Max has been very busy chasing success. The Wanted just shot a music video for their single "Chasing the Sun," and they will release their debut U.S. album on April 24.

Justin Bieber Goes Country? Taylor Swift Joins JB In Studio

'You know, the whole album is just so different, there's so many different people collaborating,' Bieber says of Believe.

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> has added yet another A-list chart-topper to the <a href="http://www.capitalfm.com/artists/justin-bieber/news/taylor-swift/" target="_blank">collaboration</a> roster for his new album <i>Believe.</i> Speaking with Capital FM earlier this week, the Biebster announced that he's hit the studio with his very own <a href="/news/articles/1682780/taylor-swift-justin-bieber-punkd.jhtml">"Punk'd"</a> victim <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/swift__taylor/artist.jhtml">Taylor Swift</a>. </P><P> </P><P>"You know, the whole album is just so different, there's so many different people collaborating," the 18-year-old pop star said of the upcoming release. Charles Manson?s ?son? wants DNA test

Charles Manson, 77, will likely never step foot outside of prison. But he may have fathered a son before being put behind bars.

Matthew Roberts, 44, says he believes Manson fathered him during a sexual orgy. Roberts was born in Chicago in 1968 and adopted as an infant. He also bears a striking resemblance to the notorious former cult leader. Manson was convicted in 1969 for the murder of seven people, including actress Sharon Tate and her unborn child.

After Roberts tracked down his birth mother in 1998, the woman told Roberts she believes Manson is his biological father.

"It's more than just possible, but probable," Roberts told CNN. Roberts said he's tried to get a DNA test from Manson to put the question to rest but that the obtained sample was contaminated.

Along with his similar physical appearance, Roberts says he shares other character traits with Manson, including practicing a vegetarian diet. He's also an aspiring musician, as was Manson, who recorded several songs before and after being incarcerated. And in perhaps a direct reference to Manson's personality, he told CNN's Miguel Marquez "I know what goes on in my head."

This isn't the first time Roberts has received media attention for his alleged biological connection to the man who is arguably America's most notorious living killer. In a 2010 interview with Details magazine, Roberts said he suffers from disturbing night terrors.

"Sometimes I wake up covered in spiders," he said at the time. "Just hellish stuff. Movie-nightmare stuff. Some of it I won't even tell you, I won't even describe."

Nonetheless, Roberts tells CNN that if Manson is his father, he'd like to meet him before it's too late.

"If he is my father, then it would be nice to have laid eyes on him and been person to person with him once in my lifetime," Roberts said.

Gigwalk Adds Company Work Groups, Messaging And Field Tools To Paid Task Mobile App

gigGigwalk, a mobile app that allows users to get assigned basic ?gigs? or jobs from companies via their location, is unveiling a new suite of tools to allow companies to manage local work via the phone. Gigwalk, which launched last year, basically allows companies to tap into a mobile workforce for simple tasks. Users simply download the app, enter PayPal information and get assigned entry-level "gigs" or jobs that may take just a few minutes at a time in a particular location. For example, TomTom uses Gigwalk's workforce to snap pictures to verify certain navigation points, such as one-way streets, etc. These workers simply snap a picture, email them in and receive a few dollars for the easy task.

Greed for Good

Consider two powerful forces with the potential to upend the global economy as we know it. The first trend is the dramatic transformation of the nonprofit world from sleepy, under-resourced, and inefficient to market-minded, well-funded, and eager to change the world. The second trend, driven in part by the first, is the emergence of the ?philanthrocapitalist.? This new specimen of the global economy leads organizations that don?t fall neatly into either the for-profit or nonprofit worlds. Their companies are, in fact, a little bit of both. One example is Ashoka, a pioneering social-sector incubator that has helped hundreds of firms with hybrid business models take off. The new breed of market-minded ?philanthrocapitalist? is also typified by New York?s Acumen Fund, which invests donor money not in old-fashioned NGOs but in social firms that have viable business models delivering both profits and social goods (like clean water or malaria protection). If companies like these continue to prosper, they could help the world tackle many of the difficult problems that governments and traditional businesses have failed to solve.

Anti-Monopoly Service to Investigate iPad Imports

The?Federal Anti-Monopoly Service has begun an?investigation into?customs duties on?tablet PCs amidst reports that Apple is the?only manufacturer importing its products duty-free, while other tablet producers are paying import levies.

The?antitrust agency sent letters to?manufacturers inquiring how their tablets are classified, which determines customs duties, a?source told Kommersant, which was later confirmed by?the antitrust agency's information technology head Vladimir Kudryavtsev. Letters went out to?15 companies, including Acer, Samsung, Asus, HP, Lenovo and?Sony.

Problems began for?producers last fall when the?Federal Customs Service changed classification codes for?tablet computers with GPS hardware, counting them as navigators instead of?computers. This resulted in?a 5 percent import duty being levied ? which increased prices per unit by?several hundred dollars. The?customs service offered to?cancel the?duties if companies could show that the?devices really were computers.

On?Feb. 9 the?Information & Computer Technologies Industry Association sent a?letter to?the customs service explaining why the?iPad should be considered a?computer, a?source told Kommersant. The?head of?the association and?customs chief Alexander Belyaninov met on?Feb. 13 to?discuss the?topic, and?the next day the?service issued a?recommendation that the?iPad should be considered a?computer.

Apple did not respond to?a request for?comment from? The Moscow Times.

Acer Russia spokesman Denis Kutnikov said his company sent a?letter to?the customs service in?early March not only requesting that their Iconia tablet be considered a?computer, but also complaining that their products were routinely delayed at?customs. The?company has yet to?receive a?response.

The?communication director for?Lenovo in?Russia and?the CIS, Ilya Pozharsky, said the?import classification of?their devices depends on?the customs inspector ? half the?time it's declared a?navigator, the?other half a?computer.

More than half of?the 800,000 tablet computers sold in?Russia in?2011 were Apple iPads, Lenovo vice president Gleb Mishin said.?

Ariane Zurcher: Autism: Death, Fear and Hope

An autistic child has been killed. Again.

His name was Daniel Corby. He was 4 years old.

The following is by no means a cohesive or complete list.

March 2012 -- Mother kills George, her 22-year-old autistic son.

August 2011 -- Mother shot and killed her 13-year-old autistic son, Ben.

May 2011 -- Mother killed her autistic son, Glen, by strangling him with the belt from her coat.

July 2010 -- Mother strangled her two autistic children, a 2-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.

February 2010 -- Mother killed her 8-year-old autistic son, Jude.

June 2010 -- Mother allegedly kills 6-month-old son, Rylan, because she suspected he might have autism.

September 2009 -- Father kills 11-year-old autistic son, Jeremy.

2009 -- Mother withholds medication from her autistic son, Jeremy, who has leukemia. Jeremy dies as a result.

Our outrage, our pleas that these deaths stop, our desire to blame, rationalize or even understand will not bring any of these children back or prevent another parent from killing their child. What will make a difference is a change in the way we as a society view autism and autistic people.

The word "autism" causes fear. So little is actually understood about autism and so much of what people hear are theories, so it is natural that people would find autism frightening. We fear what we do not know or understand. This has been true throughout history. The ever-changing "statistics," the words used to describe autism, the vastness and mutable nature of the spectrum, how indefinable it is, all add fuel to the fear. It doesn't have to be this way, though. And that is where there is tremendous hope.

A year ago I regularly lay awake at night worrying about my daughter's future. I knew of very few adults with autism. I had read everything written by both Donna Williams and Temple Grandin, but their experiences seemed far removed from my daughter's. All of that changed when I began following blogs written by autistic adults. I had an "aha" moment, the moment of realization and understanding when what was once abstract becomes real. A friend of mine told me of her "aha" moment during an autism conference she attended where she saw a nonverbal young man who reminded her of her son. He had the same gestures, the same stims as her child. She imagined this was her son in 15 years, and she was filled with despair. The following day she returned to the conference and attended a workshop on facilitated communication, led by none other than the young man she'd seen the day before. Only now he was communicating his thoughts. His words were intelligent, articulate and heartwarmingly beautiful. She left the conference in tears realizing how she had underestimated this young man, as well as her own child. She vowed never to do so again.

Assume competence. Even if there is no "proof" that our neuro-typical minds can grasp, we must assume competence. Because to do otherwise is to fail our children.

I have written about much of this at length in other posts, so I am not going to continue now, but I strongly urge anyone who is frightened to read the blogs written by autists. The veil of mystery may be lifted. It was for me. Reading the words of autists alleviated my worries. Here were adults leading the way, so that those, like my daughter, Emma, might not have to. My life, so long dominated by fear, is now dominated by hope.

There is a large and thriving community out there of both autists and parents of autists who are writing, blogging, commenting and reaching out to one another. The only requirement to join this community is a desire for connection. Because of the Internet, we all have a support system if we want it. No parent or autist need feel alone. The autists are the ones who can and will change the current perception of what it means to be autistic. They are writing and speaking forcefully, beautifully, with eloquence and power. I have said this before, I will say it again: We must listen to them. They need to be included in any discussion, organization and conference regarding autism. More importantly, they need to be included, period. Some parents have said to me, "but they have blogs." They can talk. They are articulate. My response is, yes, that is exactly why we must listen. Just because some of our children cannot speak or those who do may not be as articulate doesn't take away from the fact that these autists can and do. If our children could speak as eloquently, how do we know what they would say? If they could speak, wouldn't we listen?

The following is a list of wonderful blogs that have literally changed my life:

In addition, for anyone who has an autistic child no matter where they fall on the spectrum, please read this interview with Henry Markram on his Intense World Theory for Autism. It is the first time I've read a "theory" that validated everything I felt I saw in my daughter, Emma.

We may not be able to stop parents from killing their children, but we can change how people view autism.

We must not succumb to fear. Hope is all around us, we just need to stop and listen.

Mr Gay World pageant dazzles S. Africa

One came from the Philippines with mechanical wings, another from Mexico in a rhinestoned Mayan headdress, and one from Finland simply wrapped in a sauna towel.

But for the first time, the contestants in Mr Gay World came to Africa, a continent where most countries still maintain sodomy laws, sometimes punishable by death.

Only its fourth edition, South Africans have won twice -- both times by white men.

This year a towering German who lives in New Zealand, Andreas Derleth, took the title late Sunday. He beat out 21 other men, including the first black African contestants, whose participation brought its own difficulties.

Taurai Zhanje, the contestant from Zimbabwe where President Robert Mugabe regularly brands gays as "worse than pigs and dogs", pulled out after government agents intimidated his family.

"There was relentless pressure on the delegate from Zimbabwe to withdraw," said Coenie Kukkuk, the contest's Africa director.

"His family was followed by agents of the regime in Zimbabwe. His mother is employed by the government, she surely would have lost her job. And with 80 percent unemployment, she was looking after a lot of people," he said.

The Ethiopian delegate, Robel Hailu, is a student in South Africa but was disinherited after a radio station in Addis Ababa announced his title.

The contrast between the rest of the continent and South Africa couldn't be greater. Gay rights are enshrined in the constitution, and gays can legally marry and adopt.

This year's contestant, Lance Weyer, is an elected local councillor for the opposition Democratic Alliance in the coastal city of East London.

He praised South Africa for supporting gay rights in forums like the UN Human Rights Council, even in the face of opposition from many other African countries.

"We need to be working with those governments to educate them," he said from the stage. "You can't just decide that you're going to support certain rights and not others."

Many black gay South Africans still suffer discrimination and attacks. Lesbians in particular are the target of "corrective rapes" -- in which their attackers claim the rape will "cure" their homosexuality.

In some African countries, like Botswana and Malawi, younger gays are grouping together aided by the spread of cell phones and the Internet. They're beginning to form new organisations or work with other rights groups to push for change.

And it's not just Africans who face challenges.

In Bulgaria, former Olympian Chavdar Arsov lost his job as the luge coach for the national team after he participated in the contest.

China has banned the competition and officially reprimanded the country's only-ever contestant, Xiao Dai, who defied a ban by Beijing to participate in the 2010 contest in Oslo.

Most of the contestants came from Europe and the Americas, with none from the Muslim world and few from Africa and Asia.

And while the competition features extravagant costumes and skimpy swimwear, Kukkuk said such contests can be a force for change.

"It's the search for a global (gay) ambassador who can represent human rights," he said.

"Beautiful men yes, but beautiful with a purpose."

In Ethiopia, Kukkuk said, "there was never a talk or discussion or debate about (gay) issues before. Now there is."

In Namibia, Wendelinus Hamutenya drew global attention when he was beaten and hospitalised two weeks after winning his title.

He's not sure the attack was a hate crime, and he says that since winning his title, he's started a support group for gay Namibians on Facebook that has attracted more than 900 members.

Namibia's government has also approached him to work on the nation's first survey of men who have sex with men.

"It was a breakthrough," he said.

What to Expect at a Miracle-Ear Hearing Test

Hearing loss affects more than 30 million Americans. Consistently it is ranked as the third most common chronic health condition. With such large numbers affected, you might think that hearing loss is a well understood condition by the general public, and one that is confronted quickly. Unfortunately, this is often not the case. Many men and women are hesitant about going to a hearing test in Wysox, PA. In fact, some reports state that men and women will put off getting a hearing test for months or even years at a time. This is a great shame because, in the intervening time, their hearing loss may have become even worse. There?s no good reason to delay getting to a free, comprehensive Miracle-Ear hearing test.

There are a couple of things to note about a Miracle-Ear test. The first thing is that you?ll need to bring a companion with you. This should be a spouse, adult child or close friend?basically someone whose voice you know intimately. This companion can provide you with support during the exam, but they also serve a few more practical roles. During the initial interview phase of the hearing test in Wysox, PA, the Miracle-Ear hearing specialist will get a better sense of the patients? hearing loss and how it?s affecting their lives and the lives of their loved ones. Many times, the patients underestimated both the severity and the effects of their hearing loss. They often think that their loved ones and friends don?t really notice their hearing loss. The companions are able to offer the reality of the situation in a starker light, which will only help the hearing specialists provide the best solutions available to the patients.

After the interview portion of a hearing test, the hearing specialists will use a video otoscope to investigate the patients? ears. This device allows them to project their findings on a video screen that is attached to the device so that the patients can see for themselves. This portion helps the specialists determine if there are any foreign objects inhibiting hearing.

Men and women should get themselves to a hearing test at the first sign of hearing impairment. Otherwise, they should start getting a yearly test once they?re about 55 years old. Even if they don?t need hearing aids after one of these tests, they will have established a baseline to their hearing against which they can judge future tests.

N Korea moves rocket into place

The BBC's Damian Grammaticas was invited by North Korean officials to witness preparations for the launch.

North Korea has moved into place a long-range rocket for a controversial launch later this month - amid reports it is also planning a nuclear test.

Pyongyang says the Unha-3 rocket, which it plans to launch between 12 and 16 April, will put a satellite into orbit.

But opponents of the move fear it is a disguised long-range missile test.

Meanwhile, South Korean officials say new satellite images suggest the North is preparing to carry out a third nuclear test.

The images show piles of earth and sand at the entrance of a tunnel at the Punggye-ri site, where tests of a nuclear bomb were previously carried out in 2006 and 2009, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports.

"Recent satellite images led us to conclude the North has been secretly digging a new underground tunnel in the nuclear test site... besides two others where the previous tests were conducted," one unnamed official told the AFP news agency.

North Korea has been under close scrutiny by its neighbours and the international community since Kim Jong-un became leader of the secretive state following the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, in December 2011.

Analysis

Inviting Western journalists to its top secret launch site is a big step for the world's most closed country.

It's part of a concerted effort by North Korea to convince its critics that the rocket programme is for perfectly legitimate and peaceful purposes.

North Korea has also tried to soften the diplomatic impact by choosing a new southerly trajectory - so the rocket won't fly over the main islands of Japan .

It's not a strategy that's likely to convince the United States and its allies - they say the rocket is a potential delivery system for the North's nuclear weapons.

But it may make it easier for China to resist pressure for further sanctions against its neighbour and old ally.

Pyongyang had agreed in February to a partial freeze in nuclear activities and a missile test moratorium in return for US food aid. But the deal was put on hold last month after the North announced its rocket launch plans.

'Peaceful purposes'

Foreign journalists were taken by train to the Sohae satellite station at Tongchang-ri, on the country's north-west coast, to see for themselves the final preparations for the rocket launch.

All three stages of the rocket were visibly in position at the launch pad, an Associated Press reporter said from the scene.

Station manager Jang Myong-jim told reporters that preparations were on track and fueling would begin soon, without giving exact timings.

He said the 100kg (220 pound) satellite is designed to send back images and information that will be used for weather forecasts as well as surveys of North Korea's natural resources, the AP reports.

Pyongyang has previously said the launch, for "peaceful purposes", is to mark the centennial of the birth of founding leader Kim Il-sung.

But the United States and North Korea's neighbours say it contravenes UN resolutions that were imposed after a similar launch in April 2009.

Japan and South Korea have warned they will shoot the rocket down if it strays into their territory.

Tides turn some habitable planets hellish

TIDES evoke the sea, but they may dry out what would otherwise be habitable planets around small stars, making them hostile to life.

Rory Barnes of the University of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues calculated what would happen to Earth-like planets orbiting the most common type of star in the galaxy: red dwarfs.

These stars are much cooler and fainter than the sun, meaning the habitable zones around them - in which planets can have liquid water on their surface - are much closer in. Any planets orbiting in those zones feel very strong gravitational tugs from the star.

Unless such a planet travels on a perfectly circular orbit, the strength of the star's pull varies at different points along its path. This squeezes and stretches the planet, heating it up.

Stars with a mass less than a third of that of our sun have habitable zones so close in that this tidal heating would evaporate any planet's water, the researchers found (arxiv.org/abs/1203.5104).

Light from the planet's star would then split the water vapour into hydrogen, which would escape into space, and oxygen, which could go on to form the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Planets blanketed in CO2 would heat up further, developing into uninhabitable hothouses like Venus, the team concludes.
