Samsung Smart TV with Google TV on display at IFA 2012, ships 'later this year'

It wasn't a part of Samsung's IFA 2012 press conference, but Samsung is showing off Google TV hardware for the first time since CES 2011 (pictured above), and will release a Smart TV with Google TV later this year. According to its press release and a blog post by the Google TV team, it will "enhance the Smart TV experience" with premium content from its Samsung Apps services. How exactly it will be merged we should see soon, but now that ARM chips are powering a cheaper, more conventionally built experience we figure whatever hung up the deal has been squashed. We should get an eye on it if it's anywhere on the show floor soon, as well as the Google TV box from Hisense, and Sony's NSZ-GS7 which already launched in the US and UK, but is coming to Germany, France and the Netherlands soon.

Update: We caught up with working hardware at Samsung's booth, but the device was disconnected from the internet, so we weren't able to take it for a proper spin. You can take a somewhat superficial look in our hands-on gallery below, along with the video after the break.

90% Compliance

Despite a fantastic lead performance, COMPLIANCE, which sparked controversy at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, is a one-note trial to endure. Basically, the famous Milgram Experiments brought to life, COMPLIANCE is a real-time look at how far we're willing to go to please authority figures. When a fast food manager is asked by a calling police officer to detain one of her employees for a possible theft, things escalate quickly on the discomfort scale. Had the story developed further than just one long phone call, I would have liked it better, but as it is, it's completely monotonous. The officer keeps asking the fast food employees to detain, question, strip search, and more the seemingly innocent young woman, and everyone pretty much complies, because they don't want to look bad in the eyes of the law. This is a completely valid premise for a film, making us question our own naivete. But it just goes on and on, hitting the same drumbeat each and every time. Ann Dowd, however, deserves special mention for quite the bravura turn as the manager. A cog in the wheel who just wants to do the right thing, she's at turn needy, brazen, and heartbreaking. This veteran actor knows how to keep you riveted. I believed every second of her performance while not believing much of anything else, and this is a film based on true events! Most scenes drag on too long, especially a pointless, endless shot of a police officer driving to the scene in one, long extended take. WHY? WHY? WHY? I admire that this film wants to explore a vulnerable part of human behavior, but without much in the way of a story, this whole thing would have been better off as an article in Psychology Today. It's clearly intended to be a screw-turning, intense experience, but it's mostly sad and numbing.

Cubs?knock off?weary?Giants

CHICAGO (AP) - While Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants are fighting for the NL West title, Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs have their own magic number.

Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer that landed on Waveland Avenue and Rizzo added a solo shot, helping Chris Volstad and the Cubs beat the weary Giants 6-4 on Friday.

Soriano also had a two-out RBI single in the first as Chicago (51-80) closed out a miserable August with a second consecutive win. The Cubs, practically locked into fifth place in the NL Central, are hoping to avoid their first 100-loss season since 1966.

"I know it's something that I don't want to be a part of," Rizzo said. "I think the magic number's down to 12 wins now. I was talking about it today. We're not going to lose 100 games. It's something we're all motivated not to do."

Posey went 3 for 3 with two RBIs for San Francisco, which had won a season-high six consecutive road games. Pablo Sandoval had a sacrifice fly and Hunter Pence drove in a run with a groundout.

The Giants rallied for an 8-4 victory in Houston on Thursday night, then arrived in Chicago around 3 a.m. They mostly stayed in the visitors' clubhouse while the Cubs took batting practice, but they looked listless for much of the muggy afternoon at Wrigley Field.

"You play indoors in AC, come in at 3, 3:30 in the morning," manager Bruce Bochy said. "And it's not just the heat, it's how humid it is out there. It's a tough day. Guys were battling back. Fighting back and get the tying run up there. Just couldn't quite get it done."

It was still quite a month for San Francisco, which went 18-11 in August to increase its division lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was the most victories for the Giants in a single month since they had 18 in September 2010, and they went on to win the World Series that year.

Volstad (2-9) allowed two runs and five hits in 5 2-3 innings for his second consecutive victory after a 24-start winless streak. The 6-foot-8 right-hander pitched into the seventh against Colorado on Sunday for his first win since July 10, 2011, for the Marlins against Houston.

"I felt pretty good today starting out, but the weather kinda took a little bit on me as the game kept going on," Volstad said. "I think it really did help my sinker though, as it was down and it was moving."

Madison Bumgarner (14-9) won three of his first four August starts for San Francisco, but ended up dropping his last two after another ineffective outing against Chicago.

The left-hander retired the first two batters in the third before the Cubs strung together four consecutive hits to build a 5-0 lead. Rizzo got it started with a single to center and Soriano followed with a drive to left on an 0-2 pitch for his 24th homer. Starlin Castro then singled and scored all the way from first on Welington Castillo's double to the gap in left-center.

Castillo moved to third on the throw home and headed for the plate when the ball got away from Posey.

"I didn't have it great. It didn't really stick in my pocket," Posey said. "When I went to tag, he knocked it out."

Bumgarner was late backing up home and his high return throw went off the All-Star catcher's glove, allowing Castillo to score easily.

"I was being stubborn with myself and it cost us another run," Bumgarner said. "You never want to do that."

Rizzo added his 10th homer in the fifth, a drive to left-center that skipped off the basket and caromed back onto the field. The big first baseman hustled into third, but the drive was eventually changed to a home run after a short replay review.

Carlos Marmol worked the ninth for his 17th save in 19 chances. The right-hander has converted 16 straight save opportunities.

"Bullpen did a nice job, getting some tough outs there when he had to get them," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said.

Soriano, who turned down a trade to San Francisco earlier this season, went 2 for 4 for the Cubs, who finished August with an 8-21 record. He also had a game-ending RBI single in Thursday's dramatic 12-11 victory over the Milwaukee.

"It's very hard, playing the West Coast, especially in that field," Soriano said, referring to the vetoed deal with the Giants. "It's not the team. They have a very good team, but I think it's more the city, because the weather."

NOTES: Posey will start at first base on Saturday. Bochy said before the game he would get a day off this weekend. ... The Cubs recalled reliever Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Iowa and sent fellow LHP Brooks Raley to the minors. They also announced they will recall OFs Tony Campana and Dave Sappelt and INF Adrian Cardenas when major league rosters expand on Saturday. Raley's season is over, and LHP Chris Rusin will be recalled on Tuesday to start at Washington. RHP Miguel Socolovich, who was claimed off waivers from Baltimore on Aug. 23, will be added to the active roster on Sunday. Backup C Anthony Recker, who was acquired in a trade with Oakland, is expected to join the team on Tuesday. ... RHP Tim Lincecum (7-14, 5.30 ERA) starts for San Francisco on Saturday against RHP Justin Germano (2-4, 5.91 ERA). Lincecum is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in four career starts at Wrigley Field.

Amidst continuing uncertainty facing over 350 Indian students, the London Metropolitan University has closed its two offices in New Delhi and Chennai.

LONDON: Amidst continuing uncertainty facing over 350 Indian students, the London Metropolitan University has closed its two offices in New Delhi and Chennai, which until recently were involved in processing the applications of Indian students.

London Metropolitan University's (LMU) licence to admit and teach international students was yesterday revoked by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) due to "serious and systemic failures".

The revocation let to fury among students and several stake-holders who said the action was "disproportionate" that would endanger the future of the university.

A university representative today confirmed to PTI that the two offices in India had been closed.

Until two days ago, LMU listed the contact details of its offices in New Delhi and Chennai. The details have now been removed from its webpage focused on India.

Since yesterday, calls to the two offices were greeted with automated messages.

LMU's webpage on India states: "London Metropolitan University is one of the most popular universities in the UK for students from India", and promises a 1000 pound 'scholarship'.

It also mentions details about awarding 'Mahatma Gandhi scholarships' to three postgraduate students.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Indian high commission said it was in touch with LMU, but none of the over 350 Indian students affected by the revocation had so far contacted the high commission for assistance.

Universities UK, the organisation representing all British universities, sought to reassure international students at other universities that the decision to revoke LMU's licence did not affect them.

Prof Eric Thomas, President of Universities UK, said: "The action by the UKBA applies to London Metropolitan University alone and it will not affect international students registered with the other 133 universities in UUK's membership".

He added: "The UKBA's decision only relates to the administrative requirements placed on London Metropolitan University in order to gain and retain its highly trusted sponsor status, which enabled it to recruit international students. It is certainly not part of a wider crackdown on international students coming to the UK, as some have suggested".

Prof Thomas said the UK would continue to welcome international students to some of the best universities in the world.

Reliable Continuing Education Options at Centennial College ...

Sometimes, numbers tell the strongest story. That is the case with Centennial College?s School of Continuing Education. Consider that nearly every year, 22,000 students attend the School?s 160 programs that feature 1,200 courses. Among these 22,000 students, there is a 97 per cent learner satisfaction. This high rate of satisfaction is thanks to a variety of reasons.

First and foremost, Centennial College?s Continuing Education option includes part-time, evening, weekend, online and alternative format courses ? all of which are designed to help students improve their skills, further their education and pursue a variety of interests. Secondly, the school carters to a wide range of people ? from those who have taken a break to education to professionals looking to upgrade their skills to keep up with technology. Thirdly, all course and programs foster a mature learning environment with instructors who are well equipped to relate to students and ensure that they are being respected in every step of their education journey.

Among the specific Continuing Education areas of study are: Part-time Health Studies, Business, Computers and Information Technology, Early Childhood Education, Engineering Technology, Media and Design, Retirement Communities Management/Long Term Care Management, Food Service Worker, Addiction Studies, Transportation, and more.

As previously mentioned, there are both in-school and Distance Learning options. The more traditional Continuing Education option is to attend classes on campus. This works well for students who enjoy class discussions, projects and do better learning what face-to-face interaction with an instructor. These students attend courses a few times a week, often during the evenings.

Meanwhile, independent learners who excel from studying alone may prefer the Distance Learning option of Centennial College?s School of Continuing Education. Under this umbrella, there are two choices. The first is taking Print Based Course, which usually take six months to complete. A print-based course offered through Continuing Education consists of lessons, written assignments, exams and the various tools for success. Upon registration, participants will receive a Registration Confirmation Letter, Proctor Information Form, Student Guide and all of the educational materials required to complete the course. A more modern Distance Learning option consists of online courses, which is a form of instructor-led study enabling students to work through course material and assignments in their own time and space, with 24- hour access to the online classroom. In most cases, both delivery methods require students to attend the campus towards the end of their class to write a continuing education final exam.

Those interested in attending a Continuing Education program or course should be advised that each undertaking has its own prerequisites and it?s best to check each individual program?s page to ensure that students have the necessary requirements to apply. Within certain programs there might be qualification requirements and costs for external accreditations, designations, certifications or recognitions. These are set by the granting bodies and not by Centennial College. In order to qualify for any of those external accreditations, designations, certification or recognition, students and graduates will need to follow the processes and meet the applicable requirements listed on the websites and materials of those external bodies.

ABC OF BREASTFEEDING.
From the primary moment the babe is applied to the breast, it should be suckled upon a precise arrange. this is often necessary to the well-doing of the kid, and can contribute basically to preserve the health of the parent, United Nations agency can therefore be rendered an honest nurse, and her duty at identical time can become a pleasure.

This implies, however, a careful attention on the a part of the mother to her own health; for that of her kid is basically dependent upon it. Healthy, nourishing, and edible can be procured solely from a healthy parent; and it?s against sense to expect that, if a mother impairs her health and digestion by improper diet, neglect of exercise, and impure air, she can, however, offer as wholesome and uncontaminated a fluid for her kid, as if she were diligently alert to these small print. each instance of indisposition within the nurse is at risk of have an effect on the babe.

And this leads Maine to watch, that it?s a standard mistake to suppose that, as a result of a lady is nursing, she ought thus to measure terribly absolutely, Associate in Nursingd to feature an allowance of wine, porter, or alternative hard liquor, to her usual diet. the sole results of this arrange is, to cause Associate in Nursing unnatural degree of fulness within the system, that places the nurse on the brink of illness, and that of itself oftentimes puts a stop to the secretion of the milk, rather than increasing it. the correct arrange of continuing is apparent enough; solely let attention be paid to the standard laws of health, and therefore the mother, if she have a sound constitution, can build a more robust nurse than by any foolish deviation based on cognitive content and whim.

The following case proves the correctness of this statement:?
A woman, confined along with her initial kid, left the labor space at the expiration of the third week, an honest nurse, and in good health. She had had some slight bother along with her nipples, however this was before long overcome.

The porter system was currently commenced, and from a pint to a pint and a half this drink was taken within the four and twenty hours. This was resorted to, not as a result of there was any deficiency within the offer of milk, for it absolutely was ample, and therefore the babe thriving upon it; however as a result of, having become a nurse, she was told that it absolutely was usual and necessary, which while not it her milk and strength would ere long fail.
