5 Tips to Enhance Video Marketing for Your Local Business

Video marketing is a necessity in today?s digital age where more and more individuals are turning to the Internet to watch, download and stream all types of content, from educational seminars, webinars, films, TV shows, video blogs, and the list could go on. Paleo Diet - Key To Susan's Journey To Health

Dear Robb:

I wrote my first draft the old-fashioned way with pen and paper.? Not just any paper, mind you.? I wrote in my trusty journal where I track everything from my WOD?s, to the food I eat, and many, many thoughts, feelings, and desires in between.

I was honored when you asked for my story.? Yours resonated with me immediately; especially upon hearing your mother also has SLE.? We have actually spoken (or skyped, as it were) about two years ago in a nutritional seminar where you suggested I increase my fat intake in the morning.? I was counting salmon pills as a fat.? You correctly pointed out that it was a supplement.? I digress.

My story started long ago, when I was about 11 years old.? I started to loose weight and generally felt awful.? When the doctors ordered blood tests, it was discovered that my blood count was abnormal.? In fact, it was so low that I was hospitalized almost immediately.? For the following year, I was in and out of the hospital.? No treatments seemed to help the ?blood disorder?.? The doctors ordered a bone marrow test because they were convinced it was leukemia.? Just before I had the test, I had a normal blood test.? I don?t remember much from that time.? My roommate died in the bed beside me, which stays vivid to this day.? The only other memory was the pain.? Even the gentlest touch hurt.

Fast forward about six years.? The sick 11 year old has grown into an active healthy teenager.? Then I started to get these awful, painful, swollen red lumps on my claves about the size of golf balls.? They would come and go, but my doctor could not seem to pin down a cause.

Over the next decade, the lumps would continue to come and go.? It is called Erythema Nodosum and is relatively harmless.? I had one biopsied.? The only comment the doctor made was that I had a positive ANA test at the time.? It meant nothing really, according to the doctor.? False positives happen all the time.

A few years later, I contracted a viral infection.? The worst side effect was loosing my voice for a week.? My husband thought this was wonderful.

It was strange though, because I didn?t bounce back.? I was always fatigued, loosing weight and it literally hurt to touch me.? It reminded me so much of how I felt as a child with that ?blood disorder?.? I also had a severe pain in my lower back.?? I saw my family doctor who diagnosed depression.? I left his office with a prescription for anti-depressants.

The symptoms did not improve with the medication.? In fact, they got worse.? I was always feverish and the pain in my lower back was excruciating.? I finally went to the emergency room.? They put me in a room and started me on intravenous morphine.? The pain dulled slightly.? After a battery of tests determined there was fluid near my kidneys, they called in the OBGYN.

As you mention in your book, autoimmune disease is often interconnected.? I had endometriosis pretty much since initial menstruation.? I had already had two laparoscopic surgeries by this point so the logical thing to do was call in the gyno.? He couldn?t tell what was causing the fluid, so he booked an OR for the following morning.

I woke up from the surgery to find the pain in my back had subsided.? The doctor had removed more endometriosis and drained the fluid.? ?Idiopathic? was the term he used for the fluid.? Translation: ?I have no idea what caused it.?

After another few days in the hospital, I was anxious to get out.? I had started a new position within the bank as an investment specialist and was missing some very valuable training on trusts and estates.? My husband took me from the hospital and drove me to the training centre.? I finished the course in a wheelchair.

I came home 5 days later to have my symptoms return, only worse.? The pain was unbearable.? We returned to the hospital and discovered the idiopathic fluid was again, floating around my kidneys.? The IV was inserted and the morphine pumped into my veins, but nothing seemed to help.? Once again, the doctor performed a laparoscopy to remove the free floating fluid.? I was in the hospital over two weeks before they sent me home.

I wasn?t home a week when my fever spiked, the pain worsened and we were once again, off to the hospital.? By now, my blood cell count was abnormal.? The doctors were checking for lymphoma.? All I wanted to do was simply die to escape the pain.? Of course, the fluid was back.? The final surgery was assisted by an urologist.? It wasn?t by laparoscope either.?? They cut me open, removed my left ovary, fallopian tube and part of my peritoneum.

All told, I had 6 admissions and spent over 6 months in the hospital.? I couldn?t do my new job and subsequently lost it.? I didn?t care though.? I was convinced I was going to die.

I was taking long term morphine, statex (short term) morphine, and duragesic patches but nothing worked on the pain in my back.? As one doctor remarked, ?You take enough painkillers to tranquilize a horse.? How on earth are you able to carry on a conversation??

I was bed ridden another year.? I couldn?t even go to the washroom unassisted.? We?d seen every specialist it seemed, but no one could find out what was wrong.? My family doctor finally referred me to my rheumatologist.? He took the massive file I brought and set it aside.? ?I?d like to examine you first.?? He said.? ?So the other doctor?s opinions do not cloud my judgement.?

That appointment changed my life.? He said, ?I think you have lupus? and injected me with Depo-medrol to get the immediate symptoms under control.? I also started several medications including Plaquenil, an anti-malarial, NSAIDS and immune suppressants.

6 months later, I could get out of bed.? I started to take my ?trusty sidekick?, (as I like to call him) our big loveable mutt, who never left my side out for walks.? He was patient.? I counted my progress by streetlights.? I walked to the first one and back.? Over the next month, we worked up to walking around our small block.? I then set a goal for myself to be on a volleyball court in 4 months.? I stopped taking painkillers.

I did play volleyball 4 months later.? My health continued to improve.? I had setbacks over the next few years.? The worst setback was when I herniated 3 disks in my back playing volleyball and ended up, once again, in the hospital for a few weeks.? I just thought it was my typical back pain and kept playing.

The hard part was the immune-suppressing drugs.? I couldn?t tolerate methotrexate and was weak and nauseous all the time.? The doctor switched me to an injectable form of the drug.? I injected myself Friday so I could be sick all weekend and have a relatively normal work week.? I was tired all the time and I was starting to develop cellulite on my legs.? I went to my trainer for advice.? He asked me to watch a simple you-tube video called, ?Paleo in a Nutshell?.? It made total sense.

I have been Paleo now for 3 years.? My body fat is just over 12%.? My weight is 142 lbs (I am 5?10??) and has been steady for those 3 years.? I have so much energy.? I am 41 years old and just PR?d my ?Fran? time- 4:15.? I get stopped on the street and asked what my secret is.

Most importantly though, I have stopped taking immune suppressing drugs!? I went off them in December and I hope I never need them again.

A great thing happened about 2 weeks ago.? I was at Crossfit Orillia and had just finished a WOD.? The next class was starting to filter in and among them, one of my nurses from the hospital over 10 years ago.? ?Hi Kate,? I said.? ?Remember me??? There was a look of recognition and then utter shock.

?Oh my God Susan!? she exclaimed, ?You look so good- so healthy!?? She couldn?t believe the transformation.? ?I honestly thought you weren?t going to make it.?

I honestly thought I wasn?t going to either.? The Paleo diet was the key to my journey back to health.

Hedge fund manager to pay $405M to Madoff victims

ALBANY, N.Y.?? A settlement announced Sunday will bring $405 million to victims of Bernard Madoff's historic investment scam, the state attorney general said.

The clients of hedge fund manager J. Ezra Merkin will receive $405 million, and New York state will get $5 million to cover the cost of the settlement worked out by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The victims include New York Law School, Bard College, Harlem Children's Zone, Homes for the Homeless and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty.

Schneiderman called the agreement "a victory for justice and accountability."

"Many New Yorkers entrusted their investments to Mr. Merkin, who then steered the money to Madoff while receiving millions of dollars in management and incentive fees," Schneiderman said. "By holding Mr. Merkin accountable, this settlement will help bring justice for the people and institutions that lost millions of dollars."

Merkin's attorney, Andrew J. Levander, didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.

Merkin had managed investments for hundreds of investors in four funds: Ariel Fund Ltd., Gabriel Capital L.P., Ascot Fund Ltd. and Ascot Partners L.P. Schneiderman said many of the investors are New York residents and charitable organizations. Many of them requested not to be identified.

Most investors will get more than 40 percent of their losses, but only up to $5 million. Those who lost more could see additional payments, depending on the number of investors who seek reimbursement. Investors will see the terms of the settlement in the next few days, the attorney general's office said.

Merkin used his social and charitable contacts and his reputation as a money manager over two decades to raise more than $4 billion from investors, many of them charitable groups. Schneiderman said Merkin concealed Madoff's role through misleading documents and quarterly reports.

Madoff, once the Nasdaq chairman, used his reputation and savvy to dupe sophisticated investors, regulators and Wall Street banks. Merkin invested more than $2 billion with Madoff, who used money from new investors to pay returns to previous clients.

A Schneiderman spokesman said he can't speculate on the effect of the settlement on other investors who lost millions of dollars.

A Manhattan judge in September noted that the plaintiffs had cited testimony by Merkin that he was aware of a number of people who were suspicious of the returns Madoff claimed to achieve.

Madoff confessed in December 2008 that he was running a multi-decade Ponzi scheme and that more than $65 billion he claimed to have on hand for investors had dwindled to a few hundred million dollars from an original investment of about $20 billion. He pleaded guilty to fraud and is serving a 150-year prison sentence in Butner, N.C.

The piece by Anne-Marie Slaughter described her struggles balancing a high-powered career with raising her two sons.

Clicks were "approaching 450,000 uniques," magazine spokeswoman Natalie Raabe said Friday, citing data from Omniture.

The piece, which first appeared on TheAtlantic.com website Wednesday at 9 p.m., also had more than 75,000 Facebook recommendations, not counting links on private Facebook pages where individuals engaged in heartfelt debate about work-life balance.

"I knew this was going to resonate," said Slaughter in a phone interview, but "I did not expect it to go viral quite this fast."

Slaughter, 53, served as the first female director of policy planning at the U.S. State Department in Washington D.C. from January 2009 to February 2011. She commuted home to Princeton, N.J., on weekends while her husband, Andrew Moravcsik, a professor at Princeton, served as primary caregiver for their two boys.

In the article, she recalls a glamorous reception she attended with the Obamas and other VIPs where she couldn't stop thinking about her 14-year-old son, "who had started eighth grade three weeks earlier and was already resuming what had become his pattern of skipping homework, disrupting classes, failing math, and tuning out any adult who tried to reach him."

Eventually Slaughter left the State Department to resume her career as an academic at Princeton because, she wrote, "of my desire to be with my family and my conclusion that juggling high-level government work with the needs of two teenage boys was not possible." (Her son, she says, is now doing fine.)

While the challenges of being a working mother are not exactly news, Atlantic editor-in-chief James Bennet said the magazine was certain Slaughter's story would generate a strong response. "Every family experiences this struggle and every generation has to grapple with it anew," he said. "We're a long way from solving this and I think Anne-Marie has contributed a lot to a new way to think about the problem and how to address it.

Slaughter spoke Friday by phone about the story.

AP: Describe the response to the story.

SLAUGHTER: I've just been bowled over by the powerful things women have been writing me and men too. The majority are younger women but not all. They start out by saying, 'Your article made me cry.' Then they write about what they're juggling, how they're feeling, that they've been blaming themselves for the difficulties they're having. Many of the stories make ME cry. There are women's voices and men's voices that do need to be heard. If writing this article gets those stories out there, that's the greatest reward.

AP: You note that older successful women like Hillary Clinton and Ruth Bader Ginsburg had their children first and then built careers, while many women of your generation worked on careers first, then had kids, but struggled to make it work and often had to choose one over the other. Have we been lying to young women that they can do both?

SLAUGHTER: I've said for ages that 'Yes, you can have it all, you just have to work at it.' I didn't realize how much of that depended on my being able to control my own time. I don't think it was a lie, but I think the women coming up are facing new circumstances where there are all these opportunities, opportunities men have always had, where they can try to get tenure, or try to be a partner at a firm. They're also seeing so many women in my generation who had children late and many of us had all sorts of fertility problems. They say, 'I don't want that but I want to have children. How on earth am I going to get established in my career?' So this is new for our whole society.

I think it's right that we've gotten to a place where women who are at the top or close to the top are willing to be more honest. Every generation defines itself at least in part against the one that came before. We've got a whole new generation of very accomplished young women saying, 'We want different role models but we can't find them.'

AP: In the article you say you are writing for your demographic, "highly educated well-off women who are privileged enough to have choices in the first place." How does your message relate to women who struggle with more basic issues like poverty, lack of child care, being single moms?

SLAUGHTER: I am acutely aware of the millions of women who have no choice about working and being with their children. Part of what I'm arguing is that we need to change our social policies more fundamentally with good day care, schools that end the same time work ends, and really providing for a more integrated work and school life, not to mention health care and other things. We need many more changes to allow mothers and parents to be able to spend more time with their children and have a better work-life balance. As a society, that's also about investing in our children by allowing parents to do that. Another part of what I'm arguing is that we don't have enough women politicians. We still don't have a woman president, we don't have enough women at the top of corporations. If you're going to have wider social change, part of that does come from who's in the leadership.

AP: Where do husbands, fathers and life partners figure in?

SLAUGHTER: Having a life partner who is committed to being an equal caregiver is a necessary but not sufficient condition. Without my husband I never could have gone to Washington. My husband's a hero; he was willing to take the kids during the week. That's essential. I think there are many more men than ever before saying they want to be with their kids and spend more time with them. But even with a wonderful husband, I found ? and it was the hardest thing to admit to myself ? it was still very important to my sons for me to be there. Even if you marry the man of your dreams, it doesn't solve everything.

AP: Any final advice for women who want careers and kids?

SLAUGHTER: This won't work for every profession, but having control of your own time is important. If you control your own schedule and your kid gets an ear infection, you can deal with it. If you don't deal with it, an entire week's worth of meetings and work can tumble like dominoes. Of course if you're a surgeon you can't say, 'Sorry, hold that appendix!' but for many professions, we can do it, especially with the technology we have.
